Forensic medicine is a branch of medicine dedicated to investigate injuries and deaths to determine how they occurred. It is practiced by specialized physicians known as forensic pathologists. Forensic pathologists are the only medical specialists trained to characterize injury patterns in both living and deceased individuals. Careful recognition and interpretation of injury patterns are the central skill of this field. It is what distinguishes forensic medicine from all other medical disciplines.
